Your filter

Everything you need to know

01

Your MB Smart app

Your new filter is called MB Smart. There is a new app by the same name on your phone. That app is the portal to access support and other features regarding your filter. (There is also an MB Extension and MB Protect app which can be hidden from your home screen.)

02

Public WiFi

To connect to public WiFi in a hotel, airport, or airplane, click on "Airplane WiFi" within the MB Smart app and follow the instructions carefully. When on a plane, do this before take-off while you still have service and are also able to connect to their WiFi.

03

eSIMs

The filter can rarely cause issues with installing or activating an eSim. If you add a new eSim onto your device, make sure it installs and works. If it doesn't, the filter should be temporarily turned off to add it. If you are traveling, test it out before you leave.

04

Glitches can happen

While the filter is very advanced, glitches can happen. If there is an issue due to the filter, the problem can almost always be fixed remotely by changing settings causing the issue — just reach out to support. While reaching out, please be patient, bearing in mind that the inconvenience is a very small sacrifice for the great benefit of internet safety.

05

Keep a valid card on your account

It is very important to make sure the credit card on your account does not expire and is valid. If it cannot be charged at the billing date, you will receive an email and then you will have a few days buffer, after that your internet will be blocked (as a safety measure) until payment is made. You can always add a back-up card.

06

Getting a new phone

The filter is on your physical device, it is not connected to iCloud. When you get a new phone, the filter will need to be physically installed again. Please reach out to do so. It is highly recommended to plan ahead before getting a new phone.

07

iOS updates

When a new iOS update comes out, the filter developers need to make sure that it works smoothly, and doesn't negatively interact with the update. This testing can take up to 30 days. You will be blocked from updating your phone during that period as a precaution.

Adding an app

How to download apps with your MB Smart filter

There are a few steps that need to be taken to download new apps so the filter can check if the app is allowed before it downloads.

  1. Step 1

Download the app from the App Store as you normally would. When it finishes loading, you will get a "restrictions enabled" message.

  2. Step 2

Go into your MB Smart app and click "Request App."

  3. Step 3

Click "Reload Apps" multiple times until you see the app you tried downloading.

  4. Step 4

Tap on the app you want, then tap Confirm. If the app falls into a category which is allowed based on your settings, then it should instantly be approved and the app will now show up on your home screen.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

If I have the pin to my account and can request changes, what's the point?

If you have the PIN to your account, that means the filter is not very secure. It still creates a strong time barrier. One solution is to reach out to support and have them put a note on your account that says that specific changes cannot be made without getting confirmation from a certain email or number.

If I chose to block just explicit sites, will anything else be blocked?

By default, all pictures and videos will be blocked on certain sites and apps that have explicit content on them. This includes Reddit, X, Discord, and Telegram. If this is too inconvenient and you need access to media on any of these, please reach out and we can try to make it work. For X, it is recommended to try out Threads.

Will piracy streaming sites work with the filter?

They should, although they sometimes get blocked by mistake or the media doesn't load properly. If you're having an issue with any of them, please send the site URL to 845-613-5656 to have it fixed.

What if I decide I don't want the filter anymore, what do I do?

You can reach out to support and the filter can be completely turned off remotely. To actually remove the management profile that's on your device (which shouldn't cause any issues if the filter is off), that has to be done in person at any TAG office. On an Android or computer it can be done remotely.

Can I use a VPN with the filter?

No. The filter will not let you install a VPN onto the device.

Will any content in my social media apps be filtered? How about in my messages? What about the photos on my phone? How about in a movie I'm watching?

No, they will not be filtered.

How can I make my filter settings stricter or lighter?

Everything can be changed remotely by contacting support.

Some of my apps have content in them which I would like filtered. What can I do?

Most apps cannot be filtered within the app. The only options are to have all videos blocked in the app. Another option is to use the website only and block the app, and in that case it will be possible to filter images but not videos (you could then block all videos). Another idea — there is a great app called SocialLiteApp which is able to block Instagram Reels, Snapchat Spotlight, Youtube Shorts, and many more features within social media apps. Check it out.

My Apple Watch won't pair.

Sometimes Apple Watches have issues with the filter. Usually it is fixed by restarting both devices. Sometimes it only works if the filter is turned off while restarting both and pairing, in which case you can reach out to support. In rare cases, that may need to be done twice.

I can't add an extension onto Safari.

The filter restricts adding or removing extensions. If you would like to do so, you can reach out to have your filter temporarily turned off while you do so.
